There are beautiful weddings, and then there are weddings that feel completely, unmistakably personal. Rebecca and Dale’s Halloween wedding at The Dunadry was one of those. From the emotional morning preparations to the candlelit autumn styling, heartfelt ceremony, golden hour portraits and even a haunted house backdrop for some gothic-inspired photos, their day was packed with memorable moments from beginning to end.

As a Northern Ireland wedding photographer, these are the days I love to capture most. Not just because they look incredible, but because every part of the story feels real.

A Love Story Fourteen Years in the Making

Rebecca and Dale are high school sweethearts who have been together for 14 years, so this wedding really did feel like the next chapter in a love story that had already stood the test of time.

That sense of history and meaning ran through the whole day. Their wedding wasn’t just about beautiful details, although there were plenty of those too. It was about celebrating the life they’ve built together, the people closest to them, and all the little touches that reflected who they are as a couple.

They described their wedding style as an enchanted, bookish fairytale, and that couldn’t have suited them better. With autumn colours, pumpkins, lanterns, faux moss, fairy lights and whimsical styling throughout, the whole day had a magical warmth to it. Even their table plan tied into their story, with tables named as chapters rather than numbers, a lovely nod to their journey together.

Morning Preparations at The Dunadry Hotel

One of the lovely things about getting married at The Dunadry Hotel and Gardens is how well the venue works for a full wedding day in one location. Rebecca and the girls were meant to get ready in The Cottage, a private cottage on the hotel grounds, but instead got ready in a huge suite - while Dale and the lads were getting ready in the main hotel.

Having both preparations on site always helps the day flow smoothly, and it also means there’s no wasted travel time between locations. From a photography point of view, it gives more opportunity to capture both sides of the story naturally and without stress.

The girls’ morning was full of excitement, laughter and emotion. Rebecca wears her heart on her sleeve, and there was such a genuine warmth in the room from the very beginning. One of the standout moments came when she opened a sentimental gift from Dale. It meant so much to her that the happy tears nearly got the better of her makeup. Those emotional little moments are often some of the most meaningful parts of the morning to photograph because they say so much about the connection between a couple.

Meanwhile, Dale’s morning had a great atmosphere too, with the lads getting ready in adjoining hotel rooms before making their way down to greet guests. The whole morning felt relaxed, organised and full of anticipation.

A Personal Humanist Ceremony in the River Room

Rebecca and Dale were married in the River Room at The Dunadry Hotel, and it made such a beautiful setting for their ceremony.

Their ceremony was led by Gemma Hutton, who created a warm and heartfelt atmosphere while guiding everyone through the important moments of the day. Humanist ceremonies are always a lovely option for couples who want something deeply personal, and this one was full of meaningful contributions from family.

There were readings from both the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom, a unity candle ceremony, and a handfasting involving siblings with ribbons chosen to represent qualities including love, devotion, strength and harmony. These details gave the ceremony even more emotional depth and made it feel uniquely theirs.

And yes, there was definitely a moment when Dale shed a wee tear as Rebecca came up the aisle.

Those are the moments that matter. The big emotions, the small glances, the way people hold themselves together until suddenly they can’t. As a documentary-led wedding photographer, that’s the kind of thing I’m always looking for because it tells the real story of the day.

Drinks Reception, Music and Thoughtful Details

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a drinks reception in the Copper Bar area of the hotel, with tea, coffee, canapés and live music from the brilliant Manouche Boys.

This part of the day had such a nice buzz about it. There was plenty happening without it ever feeling rushed, and guests had time to relax, chat and really enjoy themselves. There was also a live watercolour artist painting during the drinks reception, which added another creative and memorable touch to the day.

It’s always worth mentioning just how much these kinds of details add to a wedding. They don’t just make the day look beautiful, they shape the atmosphere. Rebecca and Dale clearly put so much thought into how they wanted people to feel, and the result was a wedding that felt warm, welcoming and full of personality.

Wedding Photos at The Dunadry Hotel and Gardens

If you’re planning your own wedding here and searching for a Dunadry Hotel wedding photographer, one of the biggest strengths of this venue is how much variety it offers for portraits and storytelling.

The grounds at The Dunadry Hotel are beautiful all year round, and Rebecca and Dale made the most of several brilliant portrait spots around the venue. From the main gardens to the riverside area, the secret garden and the main entrance, there were so many lovely backdrops to work with throughout the day.

One of the things they specifically wanted was a portrait down by the river under the trees, and it was easy to see why. It’s a gorgeous part of the grounds and works especially well when the light begins to soften later in the day.

We were lucky enough to get a beautiful burst of golden hour too, which added that extra layer of warmth to their portraits. Golden hour at The Dunadry can be something really special when it appears, and on a day already filled with autumn tones and soft light, it suited their wedding perfectly.

A Halloween Wedding With a Gothic Twist

Because Rebecca and Dale were married on 31st October, their wedding already had a built-in sense of atmosphere. But things got even better when the hotel invited them to have a wee look around a haunted house setup that had been running for families on the grounds earlier in the day.

This was one of those unexpected moments that made the day even more memorable.

The photos from that part of the evening had such a different feel from the rest of the gallery. They were dramatic, playful and just the right amount of gothic. It added a completely different visual chapter to the story, something between old-school horror romance and pure Halloween fun.

That’s something I always love on a wedding day. When couples are up for leaning into the setting, the season, or a fun opportunity that appears unexpectedly, it can lead to some of the most unique images of the whole day.

Sparklers, Champagne Spray and a Packed Dance Floor

The fun didn’t stop after dinner. Between the turnaround into the evening reception and the start of the party, we had time for sparklers, portraits by the big tree, and a huge champagne spray that brought plenty of energy and chaos in the best possible way.

These in-between moments are often where the wedding day opens up again. The formalities are done, everyone relaxes into the evening, and the pace changes. That’s when you can often create some of the boldest and most fun images of the day.

Once the evening entertainment got underway, the dance floor filled quickly and stayed lively. The Manouche Boys returned as a 6-piece band including saxophone before the DJ took everyone through to late into the night.

From a photography perspective, it was the perfect finish to a day that had already delivered so much variety. Emotional moments, thoughtful details, family involvement, beautiful styling, dramatic portraits and a great party at the end. It had everything.

For couples currently searching for The Dunadry wedding photos or trying to decide whether this venue might suit their day, Rebecca and Dale’s wedding is a great example of what makes it so special.

The Dunadry Hotel and Gardens works so well because everything is close at hand. You can get ready on site, hold your ceremony and reception there, move easily between spaces, and make full use of the grounds without losing momentum in the day.

It also gives couples a brilliant mix of elegant indoor spaces and attractive outdoor portrait locations, which is ideal in Northern Ireland where the weather can always keep things interesting. On Rebecca and Dale’s day, it gave us everything from cosy morning preparation photos and an emotional ceremony in the River Room to golden hour portraits, riverside images and some unexpected gothic Halloween fun.

A Wedding Full of Meaning, Magic and Personality

More than anything else, what stood out about Rebecca and Dale’s wedding was just how personal it all felt.

From involving family members in meaningful parts of the ceremony, to creating a bookish fairytale theme that reflected their personalities, to celebrating their 14-year relationship in such a heartfelt way, every element felt rooted in who they are.

That’s always what makes a wedding memorable. Not just that it looked good, but that it felt true.

Rebecca and Dale, thank you so much for having me there to capture it all. Your day was emotional, fun, creative, relaxed and full of life, and it was an absolute joy to photograph.
